One of the most underrated cartridges in the U.S. is the 9,3x62 - probably due to the fact that the .366” bullet diameter hardly is known here. The cartridge was designed in 1905 by the German gun maker Otto Bock. His aim was to make an all-round big game cartridge for use in the then German colonies in Africa. It has a slightly larger base diameter and case capacity than the .30-06, but can still be used in a standard length action, and thousands of moderately priced rifles has been made in this caliber ever since. For the same reason the 9,3x62 became an instant success. Not only the German colonists but many farmers all over Africa used it for antelopes and many also killed buffalo and even elephant using solids.
In Europe it remains a popular cartridge for hunting driven game like moose and wild boar, and it is still offered in rifles from most makers here. It would be a very good choice for most hunting in the mountainous parts of North America, and if one should choose a rifle caliber for hoofed game all over the world, this is not an a unlikely candidate.
The heavy bullets combined with a bearable recoil makes it a great choice for hunting in the bush. Due to the moderate velocity and the easily controlled expansion it is a great killer on larger game, and usable in a pinch for even the largest species. Handloaders using modern powders and pointed bullets like the 286 grain Nosler Partition will obtain a comparatively flat trajectory which makes the 9,3x62 ample for hunting anything within normal range - up to 250 or even 300 meters, provided that it is zeroed in at 200 meters. Due to the moderate velocity not even the smaller deer species will normally suffer excessive meat damage when shot with a 9,3x62.

Certain items — including shotguns, rifles, airguns and moderators — require identity verification or a valid firearms/shotgun certificate before handover and must therefore be collected in store. When purchasing an in-store only item online, you are paying a deposit. You may collect from our store or, in the case of firearms, arrange collection via a third-party Registered Firearms Dealer (RFD) at an additional cost.
We will not dispatch any age-restricted items without first verifying that the recipient is over 18. We use Parcelforce's age verification service and may request proof of ID before dispatch. Parcelforce reserve the right to decline delivery if valid ID cannot be produced. A £10.00 return charge applies if a parcel is returned due to failed age verification. Please review Parcelforce's full age verification terms before ordering.
For legal reasons, a £10.00 deduction is applied to firearms and shotgun orders at checkout. This balance is collected once we have received and verified your photographic ID and valid firearms/shotgun certificate. Payment of the balance is taken by card over the phone — please ensure you provide a valid phone number when ordering.
Before ordering, you confirm that you:
- Are over 18 and hold a current valid UK firearms or shotgun certificate with the appropriate authorisation and free slots for the item being purchased
- Understand the goods must be shipped to a registered RFD or collected in store
- Agree to pay any transfer fee directly to your chosen RFD (typically around £25)
- Acknowledge there may be a short delay while the receiving RFD is contacted and verified
After placing your order, post your original firearms or shotgun certificate (as applicable) to us by Royal Mail Special Delivery:
On receipt of your certificate, we will verify authorisation and call you to take the £10.00 balance. We will then endorse the purchase on your certificate, notify your licensing authority, and ship the goods with your completed certificate enclosed to your chosen RFD — usually the same or next working day (excluding Fridays and Saturdays). You will need to sign and return the enclosed Form 11 to your licensing authority to complete the notification.
